[61.09] Brown Dwarfs in the NOAO Deep Wide Field Survey

D. Wik (Ohio University), J. Najita, A. Dey, B. Jannuzi (NOAO)

Using stellar atmosphere models, we predict the colors of stars and brown dwarfs in the NOAO Deep Wide Field Survey bandpasses (BwRIJHK). These are compared with measured colors for the 2MASS L dwarfs and with the predicted colors of galaxies as a function of redshift. We find that the combination of optical and infrared survey bands greatly facilitate star-galaxy separation based on color selection criteria alone. They should also allow the ready identification of L dwarfs in the survey. To explore this possibility, we compare the number of color selected L dwarf candidates with the expected number of L dwarfs based on the 2MASS L dwarf luminosity function. Daniel Wik's research was supported by the NOAO/KPNO REU Program, funded by the National Science Foundation.
