[70.01] Two National Meetings on the Goals of ``Astro 101" -History and Findings

B. Partridge (Haverford College; Education Officer of the AAS)

As an introduction to this special session on the goals and strategies for introductory courses for non-majors (``Astro 101"), I will describe why the AAS sponsored two national meetings of department leaders to consider these topics. I will then outline some of the goals and some of the strategies for implementing the goals, as formulated by those present at the two meetings. These topics will be developed further by other speakers in the session. We also plan to leave plenty of time during the session on Tuesday for further discussion and further refinement of our list of goals and strategies by all those participating in the session. The two national workshops were funded by NSF's Division of Education and Human Resources.
