[19.07] X-ray Structure of the Archetypal Merger NGC 1316

D.-W. Kim, G. Fabbiano, D. Harris (Harvard-Smithsonian CfA)

With the high spatial resolution Chandra observations of the archetypal merger galaxy NGC 1316, we report fine sub-structures of hot gas and its interaction with the radio jets and cold ISM. In particular we confirmed the existence of X-ray valleys and cavities at the locations coincident with the radio jets. We have detected 80 point sources down to a flux limit of 10-15 erg sec-2 cm-2. We present their spatial distribution, X-ray properties and the luminosity function and discuss their effects in determining the X-ray properties of hot gas.
