[103.07] First Sub-Millimeter Wavelength Images from the SMA

J.M. Moran (Smithsonian Astrophysical Observotary ), Sub-Millimeter Array Team, Sub-Millimeter Array Team

We report the first high resolution sub-millimeter wavelength images obtained from the Sub-Millimeter Array (SMA). The images were made in the CO J=3-2 line at 345 GHz. Observations were obtained of several astronomical sources including the proto-planetary nebulae CRL618, CRL2688, and the young star HL Tau. The resulting CO(3-2) images of CRL618 and HL Tau both show their bipolar outflows. The CO(3-2) images of CRL2688 clearly resolve two distinct, high-velocity outflows, consistent with the published CO(2-1) images from the IRAM interferometer at Plateau de Bure(Cox et al. 2000). These preliminary observations demonstrate that the partially completed SMA is capable of producing images at sub-millimeter wavelengths.

The Sub-Millimeter Array is a collaborative project of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and the Academia Sinica, Institute of Astronomy & Astrophysics of Taiwan.
