[52.02] The Last Supper: Giants Swallowing Planets

M. Livio (Space Telescope Science Institute)

The engulfing of planets by their parent stars is an inevitable outcome of stellar evolution in the red giant branch or asymptotic giant branch phase. I will examine the effects of planet ``swallowing'' on the evolution of late-type stars. In particular, the effects on stellar rotation, activity, Lithium surface abundance, and mass loss will be investigated. I will use the existing samples of extrasolar planets to estimate the fraction of solar-type stars that will be significantly affected by the presence of planetary companions.
