[48.09] The History of The Shapley Visiting Lectureships Program - Part I

A. G. D. Philip (ISO and Union College)

In the summer of 1998 a Topical Session was held at the San Diego meeting of the AAS at which four Directors of the Shapley Visiting Lectureships Program gave papers describing their time leading the group of Shapley lecturers. Poster papers were given by Joseph Chamberlain and Franklyn Branley who were active in the Visiting Professors Program of the AAS, which preceded the Shapley Program. This was the start of an effort to document the history of the Shapley Program. The Visiting Professors program started in 1958 with support of the National Science Foundation. It continued for 16 years, starting out with three lecturers and ending up with 32 lecturers in 1973. The Shapley Program started in 1974 with 42 lecturers and is now in its 29th year. Six of the original Shapley lecturers are still active in the program. In the 2001-02 academic year there are 86 lecturers. After the winter AAS meeting in Washington DC I spent two days at the Niels Bohr Library going through the AAS archives searching for material concerning the two visiting lectureship programs. I found much useful information but the early records are very incomplete. I have contacted many of the members of the AAS Visiting Professors Program but so far I have not found anyone who has kept records from the 1960's. In June the poster paper will contain summaries of the data acquired by that time.
