[41.11] H\alpha-Derived Star-Formation Rates of 0.6 < z < 0.8 Galaxy Clusters

R. A. Finn, D. Zaritsky (University of Arizona)

We present initial results on our efforts to measure global star-formation rates (SFRs) of 0.6 < z < 0.8 galaxy clusters. We are determining SFRs using infrared narrow-band imaging centered on the rest-wavelength of H\alpha in order to 1) investigate the effect of cluster environment on galaxy evolution, and 2) determine the physical nature of the Butcher-Oemler effect. We are making two significant strides in this program. First, we are studying star-formation limited samples of galaxies, not magnitude limited samples. Second, we are measuring SFRs from the H\alpha line which is more directly related to star formation and less affected by dust and metallicity than the commonly used [OII]\lambda 3727 line. This poster presents results from the first phase of the project where we observed two z \approx 0.6 clusters at the Steward 90-inch telescope.
