[60.08] Education and Public Outreach Summary from the NVO Science Definition Team Report

I. Hawkins (UC Berkeley Space Sciences Laboratory), J. Mattei (American Association of Variable Star Observers), NVO Science Definition Team

The National Virtual Observatory Education and Public Outreach program (NVO EPO) will bring knowledge of our Universe and the excitement of discovery into the classrooms and homes of America and the world. NVO will allow scientific discoveries not possible without new enabling technologies and the seamless coordination of space- and ground-based data archives. The NVO EPO effort will likewise be designed to provide the user with an integrated view of the Universe – a value-added system that goes beyond traditional on-line portals to the various datasets. The integrated nature of NVO will provide users the opportunity to build knowledge about the Universe by comparing, integrating, and analyzing information from diverse archives, a unique capability provided by NVO that is not offered by individual data archives. NVO will reach people typically underserved by space science and will provide a unique opportunity to enhance technology literacy in a broad sense. With input from the space science community, a Science Definition Team including astronomy education professionals has put forth a set of strategies for shaping the Education and Public Outreach component of NVO. Members of the SDT will present a summary of the EPO section from the SDT report, and will be on hand to receive additional feedback and answer questions.
