[8.07] The Optical and X-ray Behavior of Sco X-1

B. J. McNamara, T. Harrison (New Mexico State University)

We suggest that Sco X-1 possesses three major optical states. Two of these states are associated with instabilities within its accretion disk while the third arises from mass transfer onto the neutron star. In the former two states, the X-ray and optical emission from Sco X-1 is uncorrelated while in the latter state these emissions are correlated. Examples of the correlated X-ray and optical emissions from this source are presented and then discussed in the context of current models of low-mass X-ray binaries.
