[45.07] The orientation of jets in AGN's: from parsecs to kiloparsecs

H. R. Schmitt, J. S. Ulvestad (NRAO - Socorro), R. R. J. Antonucci (UCSB)

We have recently shown that radio jets are not aligned preferentially perpendicular to dust disks, in Radio galaxies, and host galaxies, in Seyferts. These results seem to contradict the simplest expectation that accretion disks and host galaxy disks are aligned. We will present the results of a VLBA survey of parsec scale jets in Radio and Seyfert galaxies. We use these observations to determine the relative orientation of the jets from parsec to kiloparsec scales, the frequency of curvature in the jets, and the orientation of the parsec scale jets relative to their host galaxies and dust disks major axes. We will discuss the implications of these results on the structure of the accretion disks and the way gas is fed to the nucleus.
