[129.04] High Resolution X-ray Spectra of Bursts from GS 1826-238

The X-ray burster GS 1826-238 was observed with the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS) on 29 July 2002 for about 68 ks. Six bursts were detected with nearly identical properties, evenly spaced through the observation. The HETGS spectra for the first 25 s of the each burst were combined in order to search for spectral absorption features that would indicate the gravitational redshift to the neutron star's surface. No strong absorption features were observed. A similar result was obtained for the data from 25 to 125 s into the bursts. These spectra can be combined with the spectra of other bursts to provide deeper searches for weak absorption lines that might be common to neutron star atmospheres.
