[16.02] Locating Brown Dwarfs in the SDSS and 2MASS Databases

M. A. Hendrickson, A. Uomoto, D. A. Golimowski (Johns Hopkins University)

We are developing a database system that analyzes photometric data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the Two-Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) to find brown dwarf candidates. A combination of these data sets is needed to identify the coolest (<1000K) T dwarfs. Astrometric matches of the reddest SDSS stars with 2MASS objects provides the pool from which the color-selected subset of brown dwarf candidates is culled. We expect to find about 2000 candidates in the SDSS Data Release 1. Follow up spectroscopy will be done on the Apache Point 3.5m telescope for candidate verification.
