We present extensive optical observations of the black hole binary 4U 1543-47 in quiescence. We have 68 low resolution spectra (R=1200) taken between 1987 and 2000 using the 1.5m and 4m telescopes at Cerro Tololo and the first 8.2m telescope at ESO Paranal. In addition, we have echelle spectroscopy (R=40000) of the source obtained March 24 and 25, 2000 using the UVES instrument on the second 8.2m telescope at ESO Paranal. Finally, the source has been observed extensively using the YALO (Yale - AURA - Lisbon - Ohio State) 1m telescope at Cerro Tololo equipped with the ANDICAM optical/IR imager. We have optical images in the B, V, and I filters from 1998 until the outburst in June 2002 and J, H, and K images starting in the 2000 season. We discuss our detailed ellipsoidal models of the light and velocity curves and present refined system parameters.
