[69.05] High Resolution Grating Spectroscopy of HETE-Localized GRBs with the Chandra X-ray Observatory

N. R. Butler, R. K. Vanderspek, P. G. Ford, H. L. Marshall, G. R. Ricker (MIT), D. Q. Lamb (University of Chicago)

Very recently, two gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detected by the HETE satellite (GRB 020813, GRB 021004) have each been observed for ~80 ksec with the Chandra X-ray Observatory commencing less than one day after the event. The rapid dissimination of accurate HETE localizations resulted in the prompt identification of optical counterparts for these two bursts, and the X-rays detected from these two bursts are the brightest GRB afterglows measured by Chandra to date. We will present detailed analyses of X-ray spectra and light curves from these bursts, particularly for GRB 020813, and will discuss the relevance of spectral features in understanding and constraining the GRB host environment. This research was supported in part by NASA contract NASW-4690.
