[14.07] Intermediate Age Stars in the Outer Regions of NGC 2403

Deep g'r'i'z' images obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph on Gemini North are used to investigate the stellar content of a field located on the minor axis of the nearby Sc galaxy NGC 2403, which samples distances between 7 and 19 kpc from the galaxy center. A control field was also observed to monitor contamination from foreground stars and background galaxies. A population of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, with a peak brightness Mbol = -6, is detected out to 19 kpc from the galaxy center. The relative number density of bright AGB stars, normalized to the number of stars on the upper RGB, does not change with radius in this field. We suggest that these luminous AGB stars are related to the intermediate-age globular clusters that have been found in the outer regions of NGC 2403.
