[8.08] Exploring the Time Domain of the HST Data Archive with QDPHOT

K.J. Mighell, K. Davis (NOAO/KPNO)

We show how the QDPHOT quick-look CCD stellar photometry program can be used to quickly explore the time domain of the Data Archive of the Hubble Space Telescope. We demonstrate, in real-time with IRAF running on a laptop computer, how variable stars may be serendipitously discovered in HST observations of resolved stellar observations in the Milky Way and other Local Group galaxies. The quality of light-curve coverage will of course vary from excellent to poor depending on the original observation plan and the actual execution thereof, yet quick-look detection and analysis techniques can provide excellent information for the proper design of follow-up space-based or ground-based observations of the candidate variable stars. QDPHOT is distributed as part of the MXTOOLS package for IRAF (http://www.noao.edu/staff/mighell/mxtools). This work is supported by grants from the Applied Information Systems Research Program (AISRP; http://ssds.nasa.gov/aisrp) and the Long-Term Space Astrophysics (LTSA) program of NASA's Office of Space Science. Davis was supported by the NOAO/KPNO Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program which is funded by the National Science Foundation.
