[69.01] The Interplanetary Network Supplement to the Stern and Kommers Catalogs of Untriggered BATSE Gamma-Ray Bursts

Two catalogs of untriggered BATSE bursts have now appeared. Together they contain data on approximately 2000 events which, for various reasons, did not trigger the BATSE GRB detector, and which are arguably of cosmic origin. These events are significant because they allow the number-intensity relation for GRBs to be extended to lower fluxes and fluences than those of the triggered bursts. We have begun a systematic search for these bursts in the data of the spacecraft comprising the third interplanetary network. Because the IPN instruments are considerably less sensitive than BATSE, we do not expect to confirm the weakest bursts. Although our search is still in progress, we have confirmed over 60 of them. In a few rare cases, these events can be attributed to SGRs, but the majority are indeed cosmic and their arrival directions can be constrained significantly by the addition of the IPN data. When complete, we expect our search to confirm perhaps a total of ~100 of the strongest events in the Stern and Kommers catalogs. This validates the procedures utilized to identify and localize these bursts in the BATSE untriggered data.
