[93.08] High Resolution Spectra of H2 in Herbig-Haro Objects

R. D. Schwartz (U. of MO.-St. Louis), T. P. Greene (NASA Ames)

We report high spectral resolution (R=20,000) measurements of the H2 1-0 S(1) line in Herbig-Haro objects 38, 46/47, and 120. Velocity dispersions are observed to range from about 18 km s-1 in HH 38C to about 38 km s-1 in HH 120B as judged from gaussian deconvolutions. Double-peaked velocity profiles seen in the knots of HH 38, the base of the HH 46C jet, and HH 120 probably result from bow shock dynamics. Entrainment of molecular gas is suggested by the velocities and velocity dispersions in HH 46F at the boundary of a wind-blown cavity. The molecular emission in HH 47A suggests that reformation of H2 may be occurring either in the Mach disk flow or in the flow behind the apex of the bow shock. This project was supported by N.S.F. grant AST 9417209.
