[116.02U] Optical Imaging of Interacting Galaxies

Multiple images of six interacting or merging galaxies were obtained in an R band filter and a narrowband H alpha filter using the Southeastern Association for Research in Astronomy (SARA) 0.9 m telescope. These images were reduced in the Image Reduction and Analysis Facility (IRAF) to produce continuum free Ha images. For three of the imaged galaxies, HII regions are clearly visible in the tails: NGC 5291, IC 1182, and UGC 10675. For three of the imaged galaxies, no HII regions were detected: Arp 141, F564-01/02, and NGC 7252. The detection of no HII regions for Arp 141 is consistent with previous research that indicates a low star formation rate in this galaxy. The luminosities of the detected HII regions were calculated and found to be in the same range as the H alpha luminosities calculated by Smith and Struck (2001) for tails, bridges, and extra-disk gas clouds in interacting galactic systems.
