[11.02] X-ray spectral and variability modeling of low-frequency peaked BL Lac objects

M. Boettcher (Ohio University), J. Chiang (SLAC)

We summarize the results of a recent parameter study of various generic leptonic jet models for the broadband spectra and spectral variability of intermediate (IBLs) and low-frequency peaked BL Lac objects (LBLs). In this study, specific X-ray variability signatures of SSC-dominated versus external-Compton dominated gamma-ray production scenarios were identified. We present specific model fits to data from recent broadband campaigns on BL Lacertae, W Comae, and other BL Lac objects. The spectral fitting of several IBLs and LBLs indicates that a non-negligible contribution of an external-Compton component is required to produce acceptable broadband fits. We derive detailed predictions of X-ray spectral variability patterns based on this and alternative, purely SSC-based model scenarios. Such X-ray variability signatures should be observable with future observations by Chandra and/or XMM-Newton and can be used to distinguish between models.
