[137.04] The DEEP Galaxy Redshift Survey: the Color-Luminosity Distribution of Galaxies

We discuss the distribution of galaxies in color and absolute magnitude, and its evolution with redshift, in the DEEP1 and DEEP2 (Deep Extragalactic Evolutionary Probe) redshift surveys. These surveys provide a large sample of galaxies to redshift z ~1.2. The magnitude-color distribution shows a clear lack of low-luminosity red galaxies. A striking feature of the color-redshift distribution is a bimodality in restframe U-B color. A similar bimodality is seen locally, e.g. in Sloan Digital Sky Survey data. In our data, the location of the color divide evolves very little with redshift. These relations will provide useful information on galaxy star formation histories.
