[16.13] The Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) on Swift

H. Krimm (USRA / NASA GSFC), Swift/BAT Team

The Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) on the Swift gamma-ray burst (GRB) mission serves as the GRB trigger for Swift as well as a sensitive imaging telescope for the energy range of 15-150 keV. BAT is a coded aperture instrument with a 17 arcminute point spread function and a 2 ster partially coded FOV. The imaging array has 32768 4mm CdZnTe detectors with an area of 5243 cm2. Burst alerts including BAT positions and light curves will be distributed immediately via the GRB Coordinates Network. The BAT instrument has been assembled and is currently undergoing testing and calibration.
