[51.03] Unraveling the Cooling Trend of a Magnetar: Study of Soft Gamma Repeater SGR 1627-41

We have monitored the cooling trend of the Soft Gamma Repeater, SGR 1627-41, for the last 5 years. We present here our results, combining the initial observations with BeppoSAX with the recent results of our Chandra observations. We find that SGR 1627-41 exhibits a very flux steep decay, indicating a break in its cooling trend about two years after its activation and speculate as to the nature of this behaviour. We also present our initial results of a deep IR search for the source counterpart with the CTIO 4 m telescope.
