[21.07] Testing Unification: Examining the X-ray Properties of Seyfert Host Galaxies

S. C. Gallagher, J. C. Lee, C. R. Canizares (MIT)

The standard paradigm of Seyfert unification ascribes the differences between type 1 and type 2 active galactic nuclei to the accident of orientation angle. If this model generally applies, then the host galaxies of both types should be drawn from the same distribution. To test this prediction, we have begun a program utilizing the power of X-rays to penetrate gas and dust by examining the X-ray properties of all of the Seyfert hosts with currently available Chandra imaging. Host galaxy properties of particular interest include the spectral characteristics, distribution, and luminosity of diffuse X-ray emission as well as the properties of non-nuclear point source populations. We present the first results from this program and compare them to those of other Seyfert host galaxy surveys.
