[17.04] Properties of Burst Oscillations, Periodic Oscillations, and Kilohertz QPOs in Millisecond Accretion-Powered Pulsars

F. K. Lamb (U. Illinois)

The recent identification of two new accretion-powered millisecond pulsars, XTE J1751-305 and XTE J0929-314, and detection of strong X-ray burst oscillations during the latest outburst of the previously known accretion-powered millisecond pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658 provide unprecedented information on the physics that is responsible for producing burst and persistent periodic oscillations and how their characteristics, including their amplitudes and the harmonic content of their waveforms, depend on the accretion rate, magnetic field strength, spin frequency, and other properties of the star. I describe the relationships that are expected on theoretical grounds and compare them with the observed properties of these three objects. I also discuss the implications of their observed properties for models of the kilohertz QPOs produced by weakly-magnetic accretion-powered neutron stars.
