[17.07] Future Goals for X-Ray Timing

P. Kaaret (Harvard-Smithsonian CfA)

The new phenomena discovered with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) have given us new probes of strong-field gravity and new methods to measure the physical properties of black holes and neutron stars. These great successes are a strong indication that further progress in x-ray timing will lead to significant new scientific advances. Here, we describe some unresolved questions in x-ray timing and the advances made possible with an order of magnitude increase in x-ray timing capabilities.
