[18.05] Broadband continuum variability of blazars: General results and application to BL Lacertae in 2000

M. Boettcher (Ohio University)

Results of a recent, generic parameter study of the multiwavelength spectral variability properties of blazars in leptonic jet models will be reviewed. Special emphasis will be placed on X-ray spectral variability of low-frequency peaked and intermediate BL Lac objects. Results of coordinated multiwavelength observations of BL Lacertae in the second half of 2000 have been analyzed in detail in the framework of leptonic jet models, and will be used as an example to point out the importance of high-quality X-ray observations with good spectral and temporal resolution, to unveil the nature of the high-energy emission from BL Lac objects.
