[40.06] Stellar and Gas Content of Dwarf and Low Surface Brightness Galaxies

A. C. Schwortz, S. E. Schneider (UMass-Amherst)

Out of a target list of 1845 dwarf and low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies drawn from the Uppsala General Catalog (UGC) of galaxies, 1247 are detected in the 2-Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS). We combine data from the J-band Version 2 and 3 extended source catalogs. These data are compared with existing HI data to determine general properties of dwarf and LSB galaxies as compared to ``normal" high surface brightness galaxies. The 2MASS-detected sample possesses J-band angular radii from 7'' to nearly 1', apparent magnitudes of 10 to 14, and J-band surface brightnesses (\muJ) from 18 to 23 mag/arcsec2. The distances of these sources ranges from 2 to 100Mpc, and thus many of the high-redshift sources actually have high luminosities and masses even though they are morphologically classified as dwarfs. Our sample possesses J-band luminosites and of 106-1011LJ,\sun, and MHI=106-1011M\sun, with a "star-to-gas" ratio ranging over -2 < log(MHI/LJ) < 2, in solar units. Within the various late-type morphological classifications drawn from the UGC, we find three categories based on the physical properties of the galaxies.
