[26.02] A High-Frequency (5 GHz) Mosaic of the Galactic Center

C.C. Lang, E.S. Johnson (University of Iowa), T.J.W. Lazio (Naval Research Laboratory)

The Galactic Center (GC) has been a major target of high-resolution radio observations during the last two decades. Several lower-frequency wide-field images (at 333 MHz and 1.4 GHz) reveal unique structures over the inner few degrees of the Galaxy. Here we present a higher-frequency (5 GHz) view of the corresponding region. We have used the Very Large Array (VLA) in its compact D-array configuration to construct a mosaicked image of ~100 fields in the central 200 x 100 pc of the Galaxy. We will present the 5 GHz total intensity image of this region which has a spatial resolution of ~20". At this frequency it is also possible to obtain the linear polarization over the entire field. The scientific goals of this project include: (1) spectral and spatial analysis of the diffuse emission in the GC using the growing canon of multi-wavelength data of the same region; (2) characterization of the polarization over large scales and the identification of new polarized features; (3) the addition of VLA C-array data in the future will also allow us to achieve higher spatial resolution (~5") and characterize the radio frequency point source population.
