To stimulate interest in Space Science among urban high school students, the New York City Space Science Research Alliance (NYCSSRA) is initiating hands-on/inquiry-based research experiences and projects. In collaboration with the Discovery Institute at the College of Staten Island and the NASA PACE program at Medgar Evers College, astronomy/physics faculty in the NYCSSRA initiated a set of research-related activities that began with general Astronomy instruction. These activities have led to several projects: 1. construction of decameter radio telescopes; 2. research in the photometry and astrometry of asteroids; 3. classification of active galactic nuclei (AGN); and 4. robot construction and programming. In particular, the radio telescope project has an academic cross-section of students assisted by undergraduate Space Science and Computer Science majors. The objective is to have at least two high school sites become part of the Radio JOVE network.
