[35.07] The Impact of Recent Monitoring Studies on the Theory of Multiwaveband Variability of Blazars

A.P. Marscher (Boston U.)

Recent observations from intensive multi-telescope monitoring programs reveal strong correlations across wavebands. Among these are ``reverse'' time lags, with the lower frequency variations leading those in the X-ray. I will review the implications of these observations with respect to theoretical models for nonthermal emission from blazars, paying particular attention to the radiation mechanisms and the location of the emission regions relative to the central engine and the core of the radio jet. I will suggest new observational programs for further testing the models during the upcoming GLAST era.

This material is based upon work supported by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration under Grant No. NAG5-11811 and by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. AST0098579.
