[35.05] Optical and Infrared Variability of Blazars

M.T. Carini (Department of Physics & Astronomy, Western Kentucky University)

Since their discovery, Blazars have been known to be highly variable at optical wavelengths. Despite decades of optical observations, the optical variability in these sources is still not completely understood. Radio-optical correlation's provide important clues to the mechanisms at work within the relativistic jets believed responsible for the observed emissions, while correlations with high energy observations, in particular Gamma Ray and TeV observations, provide information on the seed photons responsible for the observed high energy emissions. I will review the current state of opical monitoring of Blazars and discuss future directions in light of the initial operations of several ground based TeV instruments and the impending launch of GLAST.
