[16.01] VUV Photoabsorption Cross Sections of C2H4 (Ethylene), C3H6 (Cyclopropane) and C3H6 (Methyl Ethylene)

F. Chen, D. Judge, R. Wu (USC)

One of our recent laboratory efforts is concerned with the interactions of ultraviolet (UV) and vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photons with light hydrocarbons under various temperature conditions. Specifically, we have measured the temperature-dependent absolute photoabsorption cross sections of molecules between 140 K and 400 K using a closed absorption cell. Both high- and low-temperature cross section data of C2H4 (ethylene), C3H6 (cyclopropane) and C3H6 (methyl ethylene) will be presented. The experimental results obtained provide the data required to evaluate the potential implication of the spectral features identified and the inferred mixing ratio determinations of the Jovian and Saturnian atmospheric constituents as well as those of other giant planets. This research is based on work supported by the NASA Planetary Atmospheres Program under Grant NAG5-11042.
