[17.06] Tidal Dynamics of the Galilean Satellites

S. Musotto, W. Moore (UCLA), F. Varadi (IGPP), G. Schubert (UCLA)

We will present the results of long term numerical simulations of the tidal and rotational evolution of the Galilean satellites. We model the tides using both the classical approach of delayed elastic response and also the full dynamical integration of the equations of motion within the body. For the deformation model, a two-layer Maxwell-viscoelastic model of the satellites will be used. The full dynamical coupling between orbital, rotational and viscoelastic dynamics leads to a complicated system of equations and involves all time scales slower than those of inertial body waves. The system needs to be time-averaged in order to obtain equations appropriate for modelling dynamics on long time scales.
