[42.04] Binarity and the Fine-Print in the Hipparcos Catalogs: A Revised Distance Scale?, More Binaries in the Solar Neighborhood

R. Olling (USNO/USRA)

We present a new analysis of the astrometric and photometric errors reported in the Hipparcos and Tycho-2 catalogs. We develop new criteria to identify likely binary systems. These systems are probably small delta-m systems that are just unresolved (d<0.1") by Hipparcos.

The astrometry of several astrophysically interesting groups of stars such as Cepheids, red clump stars, and potential SIM/TPF targets are re-analyzed.
