[47.12] XMM-Newton Observations of Newly Discovered Clusters in the Great Attractor Region

We report on the first results from an on-going XMM-Newton survey of galaxy clusters at z < 0.075 located within a 40x40 square degree region around the approximate location of the "Great Attractor" (GA) behind the Milky Way. The objective of this campaign is to elucidate the observed large-scale flow toward and beyond the GA using a complete census of the most X-ray luminous and presumably most massive clusters in this region. The sample consists of 16 systems of which all but three are new discoveries from the Clusters In the Zone of Avoidance (CIZA) X-ray survey. Here we present accurate mass measurements for three clusters observed in AO2. These data combined with results from forthcoming observations will permit a reconstruction of the local gravitational field in the GA region which is independent and complementary to the assessment based on IRAS-selected field galaxies.
