[122.04] A Chandra Investigation of the Antennae Interstellar Medium

We present an analysis of the properties of the interstellar medium (ISM) in the Antennae merging pair of galaxies (NGC4038/39), performed using the entire ~411 ks Chandra ACIS-S data set. These deep observations and Chandra's high angular resolution allow us to investigate the properties of the Antennae ISM with unprecedented spatial and spectral resolution.

We find an extremely wide variety of temperatures, densities and metal abundances, which may be explained in a Type-II Supernovae enrichment scenario.

This work was supported in part by NASA contract NAS8-39073 and NASA grants GO1-2115X and GO2-3135X.
