[52.12] Abundances of M71 Stars from Lick/IDS Indices

P. D. H. Nauta, G. Worthey (Washington State)

Three runs of low resolution stellar spectra taken at MDM Observatory in 1993 were reduced to absorption feature indices on the Lick/IDS system. The stars include field stars of a wide variety of temperatures, carbon stars, and stars in the metal-rich globular cluster M71. Relative to the original Lick/IDS system, our errors range from slightly better to several times smaller, depending on the index. Using the indices from 13 M71 stars and index fitting functions we derive an abundance for M71 that is distance and reddening independent.
