[44.04] Mass Estimates from Cataclysmic Variable Nodal Superhumps

M.M. Montgomery, M.A. Wood (Florida Institute of Technology)

We present preliminary estimates of masses for Cataclysmic Variable systems that show a periodicity in their light curves called a negative, nodal, retrograde, or infrahump. This periodicity is one that is shorter than the orbital period. We develop analytical expressions for the nodal period excess and compare our results with observations. We perform smoothed particle hydrodynamic simulations and compare the results with the analytical expressions and observations. From our results, confirmation of the primary and secondary masses obtained from analysis of observations is made or better defined. We show that systems that have nodal superhump periodicities do not have mass ratio upper and lower limits like their common, apsidal superhump counterparts.
