[112.24] HR Diagrams Based on the Michigan Spectral Catalogue and the Hipparcos Parallaxes

M. Trippe, J.R. Sowell (Georgia Tech), S.M. Caballero-Nieves, N. Houk (University of Michigan)

Spectral types and luminosity classes of the HD stars from the five volumes of the Michigan Spectral Catalogue (~160,000 stars) are combined with the distances determined by the Hipparcos satellite to produce HR diagrams. Plots are presented for 20 pc, 50 pc, 100 pc, and 200 pc. The growth in number of O, B, M, and evolved stars is clearly seen as the distance from the Sun increases. An HR diagram based on all of the Houk spectral classifications is also presented.
