It has long been known that elliptical galaxies show a correlation between far ultraviolet flux and metallicity as inferred from measurement of the Mg line strength. It is believed that the far ultraviolet flux in these old galaxies may arise from evolved stars present in the old stellar population. Using the sample of Galex detections from the SDSS DR1 spectroscopic sample, we show the correlation of the FUV - r color with the SDSS measurement of Mg strength and we compare this relationship with earlier studies based on data from the International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite. We also place constraints on the presence of residual star formation in local old elliptical galaxies. The results presented here will be based on a small portion of the eventual Galex dataset.
