[17.07] OPTIC - THE CCD Camera for Planet Hunting

Orthogonal Transfer CCDs (OTCCDs) are the wave of the future in astronomical imaging devices. They allow electronic tip-tilt, fast, low noise readout, and a number of novel photometry modes. Real-time charge shifting gives the modern planet hunter two main weapons with which to detect and study extra-solar planets. PSF shaping provides ultra-high precision photometric measurements of 1 mmag or better per few minutes of on-sky integration over an unlimited field of view. Video mode allows high speed, high precision observations reaching 1e-4 per minute of integration as well as allowing different integration times to be used simultaneously with a single OTCCD. We have successfully observed with these modes at the University of Hawaii's 2.2-m telescope on Mauna Kea and at the WIYN 3.5-m telescope on Kitt Peak. We will present results from our observations and discuss our extra-solar planet search program currently starting. We will also preview upcoming focal plane arrays of OTCCDs which will come to a telescope near you starting in mid-2004.
