[53.03] Toward Microarcsecond Astrometry: Pulsars and the Very Long Baseline Array

Determination of pulsar parallaxes and proper motions addresses fundamental astrophysical questions such as (1) The physics of core-collapse supernovae; (2) The Galactic distribution of the warm ionized medium; (3) The "size" of neutron star photospheres, with implications for the nuclear equation of state; and (4) reference frame ties.

We are in the midst of a project to obtain parallaxes and proper motions to approximately 25 pulsars, thereby doubling the total number of pulsar parallaxes and proper motions. We are observing with the NRAO Very Long Baseline Array and have conducted half of the planned 8 epochs on most objects. We summarize our astrometric techniques and present preliminary results on selected objects.
