[91.04] Chandra Observations of SDSS Galaxies: the X-ray/Star-Formation Connection

A.E. Hornschemeier, T.M. Heckman, A.F. Ptak ()

We present initial results from an archival study of Chandra ACIS observations of normal and starburst galaxies contained within the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 1 area. Our goals are to measure the X-ray emission properties of galaxies at z=0.1, and to compare X-ray measures of star formation with optical spectroscopic diagnostics. The initial results focus on the ~100 galaxies with Chandra detections. Their X-ray luminosities are typically <1041 erg s-1 and their X-ray colors are generally consistent with star formation (i.e., X-ray binaries and hot gas). We also comment on the prevalence of higher-luminosity "X-ray Bright, Optically Normal Galaxies" (XBONGS) within the SDSS population. These XBONGS are accreting supermassive black holes which lack AGN spectroscopic features in the host galaxy spectra.
