The Near-Infrared Spectrometer (NIRSpec) places the most stringent demands upon its detectors of all James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) instruments. We present the scientific rationale for challenging requirements including noise \leq6 electrons rms per exposure. In concert, we discuss laboratory test results that are informing the design of NIRSpec's detector system and operational concept.
