[116.02] Optical Identification of the X-ray Point Source Population of M101

Complete samples of X-ray point source populations within the Galaxy are difficult to obtain due to absorption and distance ambiguities. M101 is a nearby face-on spiral galaxy of a type somewhat later than the Galaxy, in a direction of low Galactic absorption (8.8 x 1019 cm-2). All of the point sources in M101 are at the same distance and are affected by no more than a moderate amount of internal absorption. It thus serves as an excellent laboratory for exploring the luminosity and spatial distribution of X-ray point sources. We have used a mosaic of 10 HST ACS fields in each of three colors to find the optical counterparts of X-ray sources found in a 92 ks Chandra observation of M101 in an attempt to constrain the nature of the underlying sources.
