[122.09] SDSS DR1 Merging Galaxies

S. Allam (New Mexico State Univ.), D. Tucker (Fermilab)

We present a new sample of merging galaxies obtained through an automated systematic search. This new sample of ~6,500 merging galaxies was extracted from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 1 (SDSS DR1, Abazajian et al. 2003) photometric data and the new sample is complete down to a limiting galaxy magnitude of g = 21.

Analysis indicates that the merging pair galaxies tend to be slightly bluer than a corresponding field sample from the SDSS DR1. Furthermore, compared to the field sample, the merging pair sample is weighted toward later type galaxies. We take this result of active star formation occurring within merging pair galaxies.
