[83.03] RR Lyrae Star Intrinsic Colors and Interstellar Reddening

A. Layden, B. Boswell (Bowling Green State Univ)

Obtaining accurate reddenings, and hence distances, to Population II objects at low Galactic latitude remains a challenge despite the availablity of all-sky reddening maps. Observations have shown that RR Lyrae variable stars (RRL) exhibit a common intrinsic (B-V) color when observed at minimum light. This enables star-by-star reddening estimates to RRL in environments where the reddening is high and spatially variable. However, such environments are better suited to photometric studies in the VI passbands. We describe a project to establish the intrinsic (V-I) color of RRL. We present new VI light curves obtained for a number of nearby, low-reddening RRL, along with a preliminary calibration of the RRL intrinsic (V-I) color and its sensitivity to metallicity and pulsation period. This project was funded by a grant from the NSF.
