[52.07] A Large Sample of AGB Stars in the Globular Cluster M5

E. Sandquist (San Diego State U.), M. Bolte (U. California, Santa Cruz)

We present a large (98 stars) complete sample of AGB stars in the globular cluster M5 that were selected using a combination of ground-based and archival HST (Piotto et al. 2002) photometry in B, V, and I bands. The sample covers the innermost 8 arcminutes of the cluster. In combination with a corresponding sample of horizontal branch stars, we derive a population ratio value R2 = 0.18 ±0.02 - a high value that is related to the cluster's horizontal branch morphology. We also examine methods of extracting evolutionary information from the distribution of stars on the AGB, including a ratio of the population of clump to non-clump stars, and the cumulative luminosity function.
