[34.11] Constraints on the First Stars From Lyman-alpha Emission Surveys

S. Malhotra (Space Telescope Science Institute), Large Area Lyman Alpha (LALA) survey Collaboration

The Lyman-alpha emitters discovered at z=3-6.6 show one of the properties predicted for the first generation of stars: namely large equivalent width of the Lyman-alpha line. The second prediction, that of a Helium line at 1640 angstrom is not yet fulfilled. Both these predictions arise from having unusually hot stars due to metal-free population, or a top-heavy IMF, or both. Either the Lyman-alpha emitters are not forming their first generation of stars or the pop-III models need to be constrained to produce fainter He line. Mid-IR observations of Lyman-alpha emitters can reveal if there was a previous generation of stars and potentially resolve this issue.
